WiseSoft Bulk AD Users - BETA Testing

Download

Introduction

WiseSoft Bulk AD Users is a tool that makes it easy to perform bulk updates to Active Directory User account attributes.  Previously you might have wrote scripts to perform these types of updates or gone through a very tedious process of performing these updates one at a time via the ADU&C interface.  Bulk AD Users makes this process much simpler and also provides an XML log file that allows you to undo any unwanted updates.

The application has powerful query capabilities that allow you to select the user accounts you want to update. The Bulk Modify feature allows you to update user account attributes using an interface very similar to the user dialog in Active Directory Users and Computers.  This is ideal when you want to update an attribute to a specific value for all user accounts and it's also flexible enough to allow you to base your update on existing attributes.  The CSV Update and Edit In Excel features provide an alternative method of updating user data, allowing you to perform updates that can't be based on the values of existing attributes.

WiseSoft Bulk AD Users was previously a part of the Password Control application called Bulk Password Control. The name was no longer appropriate for the application as it allows you to update virtually any user attribute, so a decision was made to name the application "Bulk AD Users".  A decision was also made to separate this tool from the Password Control application, as the tool is targeted more towards network administrators than helpdesk staff.  The new application is faster, more efficient and has more features than it's predecessor.

New Features

(List of changes from Bulk Password Control to WiseSoft Bulk AD Users version 1.0 BETA)

  • "Bulk Password Control" is now called "Bulk AD Users" .
The new name provides a better description of the applications capabilities.
  • A separate application from Password Control
Password Control is a simple tool to allow helpdesk staff to reset user passwords.  Bulk AD Users is a powerful application designed to allow network administrators perform bulk updates to Active Directory user attributes.  I believe that it's more appropriate for these to be two separate tools.
  • Improved Performance
Performance has been improved in a number of areas of the application. Users with large domains should notice a significant improvement in performance.
  • Connect as Feature has been replaced.
The old version only allowed you to specify the domain and connection details via the Password Control interface.  The connect as feature used impersonation to allow you to run as a different user - This was problematic if you wanted to run the application from a workgroup computer or connect to a non-trusted domain.  The new connect feature makes it much easier to connect to your domain.
  • Improved Selection From OU
Multiple OUs can now be selected and performance is much faster when loading large domain trees.
  • Improved User selection from query
Similar to the change above, you can select multiple OUs as the search root. The new version also gives you full control over the filter that is used to query Active Directory.
  • Improved Selection from Group
The 1000 group limit has been removed in the new version. The UI has been improved and the group list can now be searched.
  • Show Password in Clear Text Option
This allows you to see the password you are entering instead of the password character. It’s useful if you want to verify that you’ve entered the new password correctly.
  • Bulk Password Control Toolbar
The toolbar gives you quick access to the various features of the application
  • Password Generation Improvements
Additional options have been added to the password mask to allow you to use proper case or mixed case words.
  •  View Menu
This allows you to display friendly names in the grid and to toggle the display of the toolbar and password changer. Other menu items have been re-arranged to present them in a more intuitive manor.
  • Improved Status Information
The app now shows the number of user accounts processed.
  • Command Line parameters
Connection information can be passed to the application via command line parameters.
  • Reset Passwords from CSV/Excel
The Update from CSV and Edit In Excel features have been extended to allow you to reset passwords.

Download and start Beta Testing!

WiseSoft Bulk AD Users is currently under beta testing.  Beta testing gives you to opportunity to use the application before the official release date and to provide feedback to help improve the quality of the application.  Your time spent testing the application and providing feedback is very much appreciated.

It's recommended that you don't use the beta version on your production network.  Also note that performing bulk updates to user attributes has an element of risk regardless of the tool used to perform the update.  Bulk AD Users attempts to reduce this risk by producing an XML log file and providing a tool to rollback unwanted changes.  In addition to this, it's always good idea to have a recent backup of your Active Directory and to have a tried and tested fall-back plan in case of failure.  I recommend testing any updates in a QA environment similar to your live network.  You might also need to consider the increase in replication traffic and additional load on your domain controllers, depending on the size of the update and your network infrastructure.

Installation Instructions

The beta version does not have an installer.  Please ensure that you have version 2.0 of the .NET framework installed on your computer.  Extract the files from the zip to a folder on your local computer and double-click the "BulkADUsers.exe" file to launch the application.

Help & Documentation

There is no updated documentation at this point in time.  I'm working on producing updated documentation for Bulk AD Users, but much of the old documentation for Bulk Password Control/Bulk Modify will still apply. If you are unable to find an answer, please post your question on the forum and I'll do my best to provide you with an answer.
